God loves us as high and wide and long and far, as passionately and fiercely as we can imagine. He exhibits calmness and strength in the face of danger, pain and adversity. He shows mercy to His debtors, saving them from the punishment they deserve. Longsuffering. Limitless Passion.
An old saying goes: The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree–implying the fruit (child) inherits the quality of the tree (parent). But which tree are we going to choose? Will we choose to be children of the world, carrying on in independence and bearing whatever natural consequences might follow from that decision? Or will we choose Jesus, living out of our spirit, according to the True Image we were created to resemble… the apples of His eye.
Instead of feeling condemnation for not having enough will power, consider talking to Jesus about what’s really going on and ask Him to show you how grace and love can turn things around.
Calling all cars… “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me–watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matthew 11:28-30, The Message)
As our perfect parent, under Grace, God no longer says, “Because I said so,” but “Because I love you. And because you love me.”
