Figgy Pudding Ingredients: Sweet Molasses (5 of 5)

“Then I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the LORD; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God, for they shall return to Me with their whole heart.”
A heart to know Him. I can’t think of a sweeter gift. Back in the days when I was living all for me and ignoring God every step of the way, I was empty. I may not have admitted it at the time, even had some fun along the way—but I knew in my core that something was missing.

God had chosen me, just like He’s chosen you. He’s given me a heart to know Him, and that heart will never be truly satisfied by anything else. And neither will yours. Now sometimes this getting to know Him phase can be a bit like slow molasses. We might be a little stubborn in coming around… but God, who created our hearts, knows our hearts. He knows his chosen will return to Him, and not half-heartedly for an hour or so on Sunday mornings, but “with their whole heart.”

And so we finish off our figgy pudding, rich with promise for all good figs, on the sweetest note of all—the amazing love our Lord has for us. By the way, I’ve never had real figgy pudding and actually always thought it sounded kinda gross. But now I’m curious to try some. (If you’re curious too, the ingredients listed in this series are the actual ingredients!) Either way, I’m not hesitating eating to gobble up anything Jesus sends my direction, figgy or otherwise.

Scriptural references: Eph. 1:4-5

Then the LORD said to me, “What do you see, Jeremiah?”

And I said, “Figs, the good figs, very good; and the bad, very bad, which cannot be eaten, they are so bad.”

Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: ‘Like these good figs, so will I acknowledge those who are carried away captive from Judah, whom I have sent out of this place for their own good, into the land of the Chaldeans. For I will set My eyes on them for good, and I will bring them back to this land; I will build them and not pull them down, and I will plant them and not pluck them up. Then I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the LORD; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God, for they shall return to Me with their whole heart.”

I have been away from leisurely computer using for weeks. It was such a treat to savor this whole series as my children slept and I caught up on my favorite figgy soul food.

This series called up so much for me. I love your imagery and metaphor. I love to be reminded to live my best life, fear not, trust, and to bear fruit.

Good stuff. And because I am big dork I also love to be reminded of that Muppets Christmas where they sing “We wish you a Merry Christmas” and after they sing the figgy pudding verse they scream “we won’t go until we get some”-I can’t make that fit in a meaningful way, but yum!
